Tennis Teams Sweep Past South Carolina State
02/16/2004 ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- East Carolina's men ran their record to 4-0 while the women pulled out a close match as both squads posted wins at South Carolina State on Friday.
The Pirate men won, 6-1, while the Lady Pirates (4-4) claimed a 4-3 victory. In a match closer than the final team score indicated, ECU's men took the doubles point by winning two of three then won five of the six singles matches. Three of the singles wins, however, went to third sets or tiebreakers. Nick Rose and Paulo Baumer won at flight two doubles, 8-5, while Mark Gellard and Felipe Fonseca won at flight three, 8-4. In singles, Charl Meyer won in straight sets at flight one, 6-3, 6-3. Baumer, Fonseca, and Gerard Galindo, playing at two, four, and six, respectively, each rebounded after losing their first sets to claim wins. Gellard cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at flight five. In the women's match, Gillie Bailey won a pivotal match at flight three singles as her 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win gave ECU the match. Bailey also paired with Cristina Meilicke for a tough 9-7 win at flight two doubles. That win, combined with an 8-1 win by Raluca Baicu and Kirstin Buchanan at flight one, earned the doubles point for the Lady Pirates. Buchanan posted a 7-5, 6-3 win at flight one singles and Baicu cruised at flight two, 6-0, 6-1. Both ECU's men's and women's teams are scheduled to travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., on Thursday to face Gardner-Webb at 1:30 p.m. MEN'S TENNIS: ECU 6, South Carolina State 1
