BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- East Carolina's men's tennis team stayed undefeated while the women won their third straight as both squads posted identical 6-1 victories over Gardner-Webb on Thursday afternoon.
The ECU men ran their record to 5-0 by winning two of three doubles matches and five of the six singles flights. The Pirates took the doubles point behind wins from Charl Meyer and Darren Mansell at flight one (8-6) and Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose at flight two (8-6). ECU then clinched the match with singles wins by Meyer, Baumer, Felipe Fonseca, Mark Gellard, and Gerard Galindo. It was Baumer's team-high seventh straight win, while Galindo, who joined the team for the spring semester, remained unbeaten (5-0) in dual match play. The Lady Pirates improved to 5-4. Like the men, they also took two of three doubles matches with wins by Raluca Baicu and Kirstin Buchanan at flight one (8-0) and Gillie Bailey and Cristina Meilicke at flight two (8-4). Victorious in singles were Baicu, Buchanan, Bailey, Meilicke, and Sara Boseman at flights one through five, respectively. Bailey has now won eight of nine singles matches since joining the team in January. Both the Pirate men and women return to Greenville for a home match against Campbell on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. WOMEN'S TENNIS: ECU 6, Gardner-Webb 1
