GREENVILLE, N.C. ---The East Carolina men's tennis team hosts Conference USA newcomer UTSA Friday afternoon at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center with matches beginning at 1:30 p.m. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Pirates and Roadrunners.
ECU brings a 9-3 overall record into the match, looking to snap a two-match slide. The Pirates had their nine-match winning streak ended by Coastal Carolina last Saturday and then lost to 32nd-ranked NC State on the road.
The Pirates, which are a perfect 8-0 at home this season, have won 69-percent of their singles matches in dual match competition with a record of 49-22. Freshman Fredric Lehfeldt leads the Pirates with nine singles wins, while senior Mario Martinez has eight. Senior Joran Vliegen and junior Damien Brenard have seven each. The Pirates are 19-10 in doubles play.
UTSA brings a 3-4 overall record into the contest, having won three of its last four dual matches. The Roadrunners are coming off a 4-3 loss at UAB on Sunday. UTSA split the six singles matches, but lost the doubles point to end its three-match winning streak.
The Roadrunners are led by the doubles team of Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman, which are ranked No. 16 in the nation. The duo is 6-0 in dual matches this season, playing exclusively at the No. 2 position. Rubio leads the team with six individual wins this spring and Stillman is second with five. As a team, UTSA is 18-24 in singles matches this season and 11-10 in doubles.
Following Friday's match, ECU will take a week off before hosting a doubleheader against George Washington and Barton on March 2.
