ECU Men Earn First National ITA Ranking
March 3, 2009
GREENVILLE, N.C. - For the first time in its history, the East Carolina men's tennis program has earned a place in the national rankings as it stands No. 61 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Poll according to a release from the organization Tuesday.
The Pirates, who have raced out to an 8-1 record so far this spring, are one of three Conference USA teams listed among the top 75 teams in the nation - joining No. 18 Tulsa and No. 34 Rice.
Shawn Heinchon, who is in his fifth year heading the East Carolina men's team, led the Pirates to their first winning campaign since 2004 last spring with a 13-12 mark. In all, Heinchon has guided ECU to its second and third-highest single-season win totals since 2001 after taking over the program.
ECU's current position has the Pirates ahead of Atlantic Coast Conference programs Clemson (68) and Maryland (74), Big 10 member Iowa (62) and others such as BYU (65), Hawai'i (71), Nevada-Las Vegas (72) and UC Irvine (75).
The Pirates will try to run their record to 10-1 and extend their win streak to six straight Saturday when they will face Wingate and Limestone in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
