ECU Men's Tennis Comes Up Short at Charlotte, 5-2
03/12/2003

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- East Carolina University's men's team did an about-face with its performances on the tennis court on Wednesday, but the end result was much the same as the Pirates lost to Charlotte, 5-2.

ECU, which lost its fourth straight match and fell to 3-7 overall, swept all three doubles matches against the 49ers, but was only able to gain one singles victory in the loss to its Conference USA rival.

The loss came a day after the Pirates came up one doubles match win short in a 4-3 loss to Elon.

In Wednesday's action, ECU claimed the doubles point as flight one partners Brad Sullivan and Charl Meyer defeated Charlotte's Marlo Santoso and Arturo Aguirre, 9-8. Nick Rose and Paulo Baumer beat the 49ers' Jonathan Clark and Christofer Boman, 8-3, at flight two, and Edward Cooper and Felipe Fonseca edged Stuart Lynas and Jonathan Vencatachellum, 9-7, at flight three.

Singles play took a different turn, however, as the only Pirate victory came at flight three, where Baumer beat Clark, 6-2, 6-3. Fonseca took Zvi Lantsberg into a third-set tiebreaker at flight five before falling, 7-5, 1-6, 10-8. All other 49er wins came in straight sets.

The Pirates look to get back on track in one week when they host regional foe UNC Wilmington on Wednesday, March 19, at 2 p.m.
