ECU Netters Fall Short vs. ASU
03/27/2003 BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Appalachian State pulled out a three-set victory in the decisive flight one singles match as the Mountaineers edged East Carolina, 4-3, in a men's tennis match held in Burlington on Wednesday.
The Pirates fell to 7-8 as their four-match win streak came to an end. ASU improved to 10-6. Senior Brad Sullivan, making a rare appearance at flight one singles, won his first set, 6-2, but dropped the next two, 6-4 and 7-5. The Pirates had already won three of the other five singles matches on the day as Charl Meyer won, 6-2, 6-4, at flight two; Paulo Baumer won, 6-4, 6-0, at flight three; and Felipe Fonseca took a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 victory at flight five. The Mountaineers took the doubles point by winning at flights two and three. Sullivan and Meyer teamed for ECU's only doubles victory at flight one as they won a hard-fought match, 9-7. The Pirates hit the road for a pair of matches in eastern South Carolina this weekend. ECU plays at Coastal Carolina on Friday (1:30 p.m.) and at College of Charleston on Saturday (12 noon).
