Jordan's Rally Keeps Lady Pirates Alive in C-USA Tennis
04/14/2003 NEW ORLEANS, La. -- A dramatic, come-from-behind win by Lyndall Jordan at flight two singles was the difference as East Carolina stayed alive in the 2003 Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournament with a 4-3 win over Cincinnati.
With the win, the Lady Pirates improve to 15-8 and are within one win of recording the most victories in a season in the program's history. Earlier in the tournament, No. 9 seeded ECU knocked off No. 8 seed UAB and lost to top-seeded Tulane. Cincinnati, the No. 11 seed, is eliminated. Down 5-2 in the third set of the pivotal singles match, Jordan rallied to win five straight games for a sensational 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win over UC's Lyndsey Molony. "Both teams played extremely well and the match was hard-fought at every position," ECU head coach Tom Morris said. "In the end, it came down to Lyndall's match, which was a great situation for us since that put our strongest, most determined, and mentally tough player on the court for us. It was a great comeback and was especially nice since she is a senior and this is her last tournament at ECU," he added. Earlier, the Lady Pirates won the doubles point by picking up wins by Jordan and Raluca Baicu at flight one (8-5) and Emily Kohl and Cristina Meilicke at flight three (8-6). However, Cincinnati made up for lost ground by claiming three singles points. Jen Capuzzi's 6-2, 6-3 win over ECU's Kirstin Buchanan at flight one tied the match up at 3-3, setting up Jordan's heroics. Kohl, at flight five, and Paulina Sierpinski, at flight four, each posted straight-set singles victories for ECU. The Lady Pirates advance to play Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. against No. 7 seed DePaul in what would be the final match of the season for ECU, win or lose. A win would place East Carolina in a final tie for fifth place while a loss would leave the Lady Pirates in a tie for seventh, matching last season's finish.
