IRVING, Texas - East Carolina earned the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye at the 2014 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship as the league announced the bracket today. The four-day event, which will be hosted by the University of Tulsa, is set for April 17-20 and will be played at the Case Tennis Center on the TU campus.
Championship action begins on Thursday, April 17, but the Pirates will not play until Friday, as they will await the winner of the first round match between No. 6-seed Charlotte and No. 11-seed Florida Atlantic. ECU defeated the 11th-seeded Owls, 4-2, in Boca Raton earlier this season, while its scheduled match against the 49ers was rained out.
The Pirates enter the tournament having won their final two matches of the regular season and four of their last five. ECU owns a 17-6 overall record, which includes a C-USA win over UTSA in addition to its victory over FAU in its lone two league matches of the season.
Along with Charlotte facing FAU Thursday, No. 7-seed UAB faces No. 10-seed UTSA with both matches set for 11 a.m. ET. Top-seeded Tulsa will await the winner of the opening match of No. 8-seed Old Dominion and No. 9-seed Southern Miss, which will take place on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.
Teams return to play Friday as No. 2 Tulane will battle the winner of UAB/UTSA, and the Pirates will square off against the winner of Charlotte/FAU, both slated for 11 a.m. ET. Afternoon showdowns between No. 4-seed Middle Tennessee and No. 5-seed Rice, and Tulsa and the ODU/USM winner start at 3 p.m. ET.
Semifinal matches are scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, and the Conference USA Championship match is at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 20.
