Men's Tennis Advances To C-USA Quarterfinals
04/15/2004 Louisville, Ky. --- East Carolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Men's Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 win over DePaul. The Pirates dominated early, claiming the doubles point. The team of Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose recorded an 8-3 performance in No. 2 doubles, and Felipe Fonseca with Mark Gellard claimed an 8-4 win in the third flight.
In singles action, Baumer defeated George Wang of DePaul, 6-2, 6-0. Fonseca topped Will Wang in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) in the No. 4 slot, while Rose beat Michael Fessler in two sets as well (6-1, 6-0) in No. 6 singles. The Pirates move on to the quarterfinal round where they will compete against second-seeded Tulane.
Singles Memphis, Tenn. --- Seventh-seeded Charlotte swept No. 10 East Carolina, 4-0, in the first round of the C-USA Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday at Seneca Park. East Carolina will battle the winner of the Cincinnati/Southern Miss match on Friday at 6 p.m. in the consolation bracket. The 49ers will now take on No. 1 Tulane at noon on Friday. Charlotte cruised to a 1-0 lead, after claiming the doubles point. Ali Piacente and Megan Bullins shut out the Pirates' team of Sara Boseman and Ashley Perkinson, 8-0, at the No. 3 doubles position. Kathy Robey and Ofra Friedman also nabbed an 8-6 victory over Gillie Bailey and Cristina Meilicke at No. 2. In singles action, Piacente claimed another win for the 49ers, after downing Boseman, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot. Charlotte clinched the match when Friedman swept Kirstin Buchanan, 6-3, 6-0.
