GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior Joran Vliegen was one of six student-athletes named to 2014 Conference USA Men's Tennis All-Academic Team, as voted upon the by the league's media relations contacts for the sport. Honorees must hold a minimum 3.2 GPA and have competed in at least 75 percent of their team's scheduled matches.
The Maaselk, Belgium native is C-USA's highest ranked male athlete by the ITA at No. 25. He enters this week's C-USA Championship as the reigning Men's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week after improving his record to 8-4 against ranked opponents this season.
Vliegen leads the Pirates with a singles record of 30-7 this season, including a 15-4 mark the No.1 position in dual matches. He compiled 19 triumphs with Colin Roller as the team's top doubles tandem.
A four-time member of the Commissioner's Honor Roll, Vliegen maintains a 3.63 GPA as a business administration major.
"Joran being named to the all-academic team speaks volumes to what a complete person he has turned into," ECU Head Coach Shawn Heinchon said. "His hard work in the classroom matches his excelance on the tennis court. We are all very proud of him."
Other selections include Charlotte junior Alex Calott and sophomore Jordi Massalle along with Old Dominion junior Carlos Lopez Villa, Rice sophomore Thomas Bennett and Tulsa graduate Cifford Marsland.
