Pirates Pick Up First Win in C-USA Men's Tennis Tourney
04/17/2003 MILWAUKEE -- East Carolina notched its first-ever win in Conference USA Men's Tennis Tournament play and avoided elimination with a 4-1 win over DePaul on Thursday afternoon.
ECU, bumped to the ninth-place semifinals in the back draw by virtue of a loss to UAB on Tuesday, improves to 9-12 and will play Saint Louis for ninth place on Friday at 12:30 p.m. CT. After splitting the first two doubles matches, ECU's Charl Meyer and Brad Sullivan claimed a win at No. 1 doubles to clinch the first point of the match. Meyer won his singles match at flight two, beating Robert Kotroczo, 6-1, 6-3. Edward Cooper won at flight three, beating Will Wang, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Felipe Fonseca defeated Michael Fessler, 6-2, 6-2 to claim the match victory. Sam Davidson scored DePaul's point with a win over Paulo Baumer at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-4.
