Pirates Seeded Eighth At C-USA Men's Tennis Championships

ORLANDO, Fla. - The tournament bracket for the 2012 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship was revealed late Monday night and East Carolina has received the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament, which begins later this week when the Pirates face No. 9 seed UCF in the opening match on Thursday at 2 p.m.
The 2012 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship takes place from Thursday through Sunday and is being hosted by UCF. The match between ECU and the Knights on Thursday afternoon will take place at the UCF Tennis Complex, with the winner moving on to face No. 1 seed Tulsa on Friday morning.
Entering the conference tournament the Pirates have a record of 13-10 for the year. ECU ended the regular season with a 4-3 win over Elon on Saturday, ending a four-matching losing streak that included losses to C-USA foes Southern Miss, Tulane and UAB. The Pirates went 0-4 against C-USA opponents, also falling at Memphis in February.
Sophomore Joran Vliegen has established himself as the Pirates' top player at the No. 1 singles slot, posting a 13-5 record at that position with three wins over C-USA rivals. Freshman Nicolas Soriano played the most matches of any player at the the No. 2 position, compiling an 8-5 ledger. The duo teamed up for a 8-4 record at No. 1 doubles. Junior John Schmitt and freshman Niels Cleeren each posted a 5-2 record at the No. 3 position, while Schmitt played the majority of his matches at No. 4 singles where he was 4-5. Freshman Damien Brenard played a vast majority of his singles matches this season at the No. 5 spot, while sophomore Mario Martinez posted an 8-4 record at the No. 6 position.
The Pirates were also the No. 8 seed at the 2011 C-USA Championships and defeated Southern Miss in the opening round before falling to top-seeded Tulsa in the second round.
