Men's Tennis Advances In Consolation Round Of C-USA Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tenth-seeded East Carolina defeated No. 11 Marquette 4-1 Friday in the ninth place consolation round of the 2005 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Chickasaw Park, but because of inclement weather was moved indoors at the DuPont Racquet Club. The doubles point was not played.

East Carolina's Felipe Fonseca defeated Ian Kawas 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Paulo Baumer beat Eigis Vedrickas 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Henrique Viana topped Brett Binkley 6-3, 6-4 at the three-spot to increase ECU's lead to 3-0. Marquette's Greg Sirotek defeated Florian Tremmell 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 5 to make it a 3-1 contest. East Carolina's Darren Mansell clinched the match, edging Pete Van Lieshout 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9) at No. 4.

East Carolina will face Charlotte Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Marquette finishes tied for eleventh place.
