Athens, Ga. --- East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen will face Florian Lakat of Mississippi State in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday morning the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee announced Tuesday.
Vliegen, ranked No. 25 in the latest ITA Men's Division I Singles Rankings, is the first Pirate to represent ECU individually at the NCAA Tennis Championship. He will square off against Lakat, who is ranked No. 61, at 10:30 a.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.
The 2014 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship begins on May 21, and the individual champion will be crowned on May 26 at the conclusion of the tournament. Weather permitting, all matches will be played outdoors at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. All matches for the singles championship will be best-of-three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches. The singles tournament consists of 64 players - 17 automatic qualifiers and 47 at-large selections.
The highest ranked player in Conference USA, Vliegen earned a spot in the 64-competitor tournament after being awarded the conference's automatic qualifier. The 2014 C-USA Player-of-the-Year, Vliegen finished the regular season with a 31-7 overall singles record, including an 8-4 mark against ranked opponents.
