GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team will open the 2012 fall season Friday at the UNCW/Landfall Fall Tennis Invitational. The tournament runs through Sunday at the Country Club of Landfall's Tennis Center. There will be three singles flights and two doubles flights.

The Pirates will be sending six student-athletes to this weekend's tournament: Damien Brenard, Blake Gregory, Mario Martinez, Ross Nigro, Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek. Soriano and Brenard will team up in doubles in Flight A, as will Martinez and Wolterbeek. Newcomers Gregory and Nigro will pair up in doubles Flight B.

Both singles flights A and B consist of 16-player brackets and feature opening round matches on Friday with two rounds Saturday and the championship and consolation finals Sunday. Flight C consists of eight players with one match each day. Opening round, quarterfinal and semi-final doubles matches will be played Friday with the finals being contested Saturday.

ECU will be joined by players from Arkansas, Charlotte, Old Dominion and VCU along with host UNC Wilmington.

"We are excited to get our fall season underway this weekend," eighth-year head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "The guys have worked very hard this fall so far and are looking forward to getting playing matches against some very strong teams."

ECU is coming off its record fifth-consecutive winning season and second-straight 13-11 campaign. The Pirates return six of their eight lettermen from a year ago and welcome five newcomers to the roster.

Brenard and Soriano finished tied for third on the team with 14 singles victories in 2011-12. Senior John Schmitt and junior Joran Vliegen, who both return this season, tied for the team lead with 16 individual triumphs last year.
