Men's Tennis Kicks Off Season With ECU Invitational
09/13/2002 GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University's men's tennis team got its 2002-03 season underway by hosting the ECU Invitational on Friday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The Pirates posted five singles victories and one doubles win in the first day of round-robin play. The tournament includes teams from Richmond, UNC Wilmington, and Mount Olive. Sophomore Paulo Baumer, a native of Brazil, led ECU's effort by posting two wins in singles play. Playing in the No. 3 singles spot, Baumer posted a 6-2, 6-0 win against Richmond's Dan Scrafford and won 6-1, 6-0 against Mount Olive's Christof Franzsen. Junior Charl Meyer also enjoyed two victories as he posted a singles win over Mount Olive's Dane Smith, 6-1, 6-4, and teamed with senior Brad Sullivan for an 8-3 doubles win over UNC Wilmington's duo of Scott Curry and John Franceschina. Sullivan also won a singles match, 6-0, 6-3, against Mount Olive's Juane Schulte. Tournament play concludes Saturday morning with play beginning at 8 a.m. The tournament is not a team-scored event.
