Sept. 16, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- For the first time in school history, members of the East Carolina men's tennis team are among the players included in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Preseason Rankings.
Senior Joran Vliegen, who was the first ECU player to be in the final ITA rankings at the end of last season, is now the first to be amidst the top singles players entering the 2013-14 season. Vliegen is ranked 87th in the 2013 preseason rankings after finishing the 2012-13 season ranked No. 125.
The native Belgian collected 28 singles victories during the 2012-13 campaign, including a 19-2 record in dual matches, and posted a pair of wins over ranked opponents. He also earned First-Team All-Conference USA accolades, leading the conference in singles victories and finishing with its second-highest winning percentage (.905).
Vliegen is also part of the preseason doubles rankings with teammate Colin Roller. The duo is ranked 30th to start the season after they finished the previous year with a final ranking of 64.
Roller and Vliegen were the first ECU doubles team to compete at the NCAA Championships in 2013. The duo received the C-USA automatic bid after they posted a 17-0 record at the No. 1 position in dual matches and was named first-team all-conference. They finished the season with just one loss, falling to the 10th-ranked duo from Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAAs.
The Pirates continue their fall season this weekend as they host the ECU Fall Shootout at the River Birch Tennis Center beginning Friday, Sept. 20.
