Pirates Open ECU Fall Shootout With 11 Wins

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team picked up 11 victories Friday on day one of the 2013 ECU Fall Shootout at River Birch Tennis Center. The round-robin match play featured one round of singles competition in which the Pirates won six of eight matches in straight sets and one round of doubles matches.
Senior Joran Vliegen was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over James Madison's Sabastian Salinas in the Purple Pod with junior Nicolas Soriano battling back after losing the second set to defeat Navy's Thomas Pecor in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 10-6).
Junior Damien Brenard opened Gold Pod play with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Brett Moorhead of James Madison. Senior Mario Martinez won his initial Gold Pod match by rallying from a set down to beat Navy's Calvin Mark (4-6, 6-2, 10-7).
Freshman Fredric Lehfeldt saw his first action as a Pirate and posted a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Krishna Jana of Navy to start Pirate Pod play. Sophomore Colin Roller made his season debut with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Milian Ruzic of James Madison.
Junior Patriek Wolterbeek and redshirt freshman Jared Morris were each straight set winners in the Skull and Bones Pod. Wolterbeek bested JMU's Alex Berdnikoff 6-2, 6-1 and Morris was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Navy's Tyler Tossavainen in his ECU debut.
The Pirates' 30th-ranked doubles team of Vliegen and Roller rolled to an 8-1 win over JMU's Moorhead and Rob Sterling in the Purple Pod.
Day two of the tournament will feature two rounds of doubles play and one round of singles matches, starting at 8:30 a.m.
