ECU Remains Unbeaten In Singles Play At Fall Shootout

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team remained unbeaten in singles play at the 2013 ECU Fall Shootout after posting 11 individual victories Saturday to improve to 19-0 this weekend. After a three-hour rain delay, selected matches were moved from the outdoor courts of the River Birch Tennis Center to the ECU Indoor Tennis Center to maintain schedule. A round of singles and doubles were each played today.
The Pirates won seven matches in straight sets, battled back to win after losing the second set twice and came from behind once after dropping the opening frame. They also notched one pro set style victory.
Senior Joran Vliegen moved to 2-0 in the Purple Pod with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Garik Yedigarian of Coastal Carolina, while Nicolas Soriano had to rally from a set down to defeat Richmond's Ethan Dunbar (1-6, 6-4, 10-7) and remain unbeaten in the pod.
Junior Damien Brenard and senior Mario Martinez both captured a three-set victory in the Gold Pod, each battling back to win the third set after dropping the second. Brenard defeated CCU's Ted Nilsson 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 and Martinez took down Dylan Trent of Richmond 6-3, 6-7, 10-7.
Sophomore Colin Roller and freshman Fredric Lehfeldt were straight set victors in the Pirate Pod. Roller quickly disposed of Reanan Samed of Coastal Carolina 6-1, 6-3 before Lehfeldt rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the first set to win 10 straight sets and post a 6-4, 6-0 win over Richmond's Canyon Teague.
ECU posted five wins in the Skull and Bones Pod. Blake Gregory, Ross Nigro, Miles Holvoet and Connor Garyotis were each triumphant in straight sets while Patriek Wolterbeek posted an 8-5 pro set win over Stefan Jakubov of Coastal Carolina.
In doubles action the teams of Vliegen and Roller along with the duo of Wolterbeek and Jared Morris remained undefeated.
The round robin tournament concludes Sunday with a round of singles and doubles action beginning at 9 a.m. Weather permitting all matches will be played at the River Birch Tennis Center, otherwise they'll be moved to the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
