TULSA, Okla.--- East Carolina University senior Joran Vliegen defeated Virginia Tech's Andreas Bjerrehus, 6-3, 6-2, on Wednesday to advance to the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships.
Vliegen, who is the first player in school history to reach the main draw, won in straight sets for the first time after he had rallied from a set down in each of his first two victories to earn a spot in the 64-player main draw on Thursday at the Michael D. Case Center. He will take on 13th-seeded Patrick Pradella of Baylor at 12:30 p.m. EST. Pradella is number 16 in the 2013 ITA Division I Preseason Singles Rankings.
Main draw doubles action will also begin Thursday. Vliegen and doubles partner Colin Roller and will face San Diego State's duo of Thorsten Bertch and Hunter Nicholas at 6 p.m.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 7-10, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
