Oct. 4, 2013
TULSA, Okla. --- East Carolina University senior Joran Vliegen rallied from one set down to defeat second-seeded Peter Kobelt of Ohio State(4-6, 6-4, 6-4) in the consolation round of the ITA All-American Championships Friday afternoon. It was the third time in the tournament that he rallied to win the final two sets after dropping the first.
Vliegen will face 32nd-ranked Stephane Piro of Florida in the quarterfinal round Saturday. The winner advances to Saturday's semifinal round. The championship match will be played Sunday.
Number 87 in the 2013 ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, Vliegen has faced four players ranked ahead of him and recorded three victories in those matches. His latest triumph over Kobelt, who was ranked third in the preseason, gave Vliegen his first career win over a top 3 player.
In doubles action Friday, Vliegen and sophomore partner Colin Roller were eliminated from the main draw by UCLA's tandem of Marcos Giron and Mackenzie MacDonald, 8-4. It was the duo's first loss in five matches this fall.
