CARY, N.C. - East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen won two singles matches Saturday at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships at the Cary Tennis Center to advance into Sunday championship semifinals.
Vliegen advanced into the field's final four participants with wins in the round of 16 and the championship quarterfinals. He defeated Wake Forest' Jon Ho 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16 before knocking out top-seeded and fifth-ranked Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest 6-2, 6-4 in the quarters.
Bogaerts is the second top-five opponent Vliegen has beaten this fall as he also defeated No. 3 Peter Kobelt of Ohio State during the ITA All-American Championships.
Vliegen, the seventh-seeded singles player, continues his play in the championship semifinals Sunday morning against third-seeded Michael Redlicki of Duke. Redlicki is No. 22 in the ITA Preseason Division I Men's Singles Rankings.
In doubles action, Vliegen partnered with sophomore Colin Roller to defeat NC State's duo of Parker McGuiness and Simon Norenius, 8-2, to advance to Sunday's championship quarterfinals. The fourth-seeded Pirates will face the fifth-seeded tandem of South Carolina's Tsvetan Mihov and Thiago Pinheiro Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
