CARY, N.C. --- East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen won the singles title of the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships with a 7-5, 6-4 win over North Carolina sophomore Brett Clark at the Cary Tennis Center.

Vliegen is the first ECU player to win the ITA Regional championship and became the first to receive an automatic bid to the National Indoor Collegiate Championships Nov. 7-10 at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Ranked 87th in the ITA Division I Men's Singles Preseason Rankings, Vliegen is now 14-2 this fall with five victories over ranked opponents. Two of his five wins over ranked foes came against top-5 players as he defeated No. 3 Peter Kobelt of Ohio State and No. 5 Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest. All seven of those matches were against players ranked ahead of him.

Vliegen will now have a three-week break from competition before returning to play.
