Joran Vliegen Named C-USA Men's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Month
Nov. 5, 2013
IRVING, Texas - East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen has been named Conference USA's October Men's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Month. Vliegen posted a 12-2 overall singles record during the month and became the first player in school history to win the Carolina Regional title and earn an automatic berth to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships. This is his second career Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Month award.
During regional championship action, he only dropped one set in seven matches. After winning his first five matches in straight sets, which included a quarterfinal victory over No. 5 Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest, he rallied from a set down to defeat No. 22 Michael Redlicki of Duke in the semifinals.
At the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Vliegen advanced to the main draw with a third round win over No. 66 Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech. Although he was beaten in the first round of the main draw, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation draw with wins over No. 52 Florent Dipe of Florida and No. 3 Peter Kobelt of Ohio State.
The senior registered a 5-2 record against ranked opponents during the month, all of which were ranked ahead of his No. 87 mark in the ITA Preseason Singles Poll.
Vliegen returns to play Thursday, Nov. 7, in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
