FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen will open play at the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Thursday at 12:30 against Oklahoma's Dane Webb. Webb was ranked No. 44 in the ITA Division I Preseason Singles Rankings, while Vliegen was ranked 87th.
This is the fourth consecutive year the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be held at the home of the US Open. After capturing the 2013 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Singles Championship last month, Vliegen earned an automatic bid to prestigious tournament, which features 32 of the nation's top singles players and 20 of the nation's top doubles squads from 21 colleges and universities. Six of the top 10 players from the ITA Division I Men's Preseason Rankings are among those competing for the ITA's final national title of the fall.
"Success begets success at any level," Pirate head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "Its great for our university, it's great for him as an individual. The recognition that he continues to receive puts us on a national level and I couldn't be happier for him to have this opportunity."
Vliegen is 2-1 against players in the field this season. He defeated Ohio State's Peter Kobelt, a potential quarterfinal opponent in New York, in the consolation round of the ITA All-American Championships and North Carolina's Brett Clark in the ITA Carolina Region final. Baylor's Patrick Pradella, the National Indoor Collegiate Championships' overall No. 1, defeated Vliegen in three sets in the first round of the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships.
