HOUSTON, Texas - The Houston men and Rice women lead after the second day of competition at the 2007 C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Rice Track Stadium Friday.

The Houston men are in front with 3.5-point lead over second-place Memphis. UTEP is third with 49 points, East Carolina is fourth with 39 points and Tulsa and Rice are fifth and sixth with 33 and 32.5 points, respectively. Southern Miss stands in seventh-place with 16 points to round out the men's day two standings.

The Rice women's team stands in first place with 54.5 points, while SMU follows in second with 38 points and UTEP in third with 36. Houston and Memphis are tied for fourth with 31 points apiece. UCF is sixth with 26 points and Tulsa ranks seventh with 23.5. East Carolina has a one-point edge over Southern Miss' 22 points for eight and ninth-places. UAB, Tulane and Marshall wraped up the women's day two standings with 15, eight and six points, respectively.

For the ECU women, it was Chelsea Salisbury who recorded the best finish of the day for the Pirates with her 4th place finish in the hammer throw event with a mark of 53.85m. Charlene Grady came in just behind Salisbury with a mark of 48.98 for 5th place while Amy Mueller also finished in the top ten, with a 7th place mark of 48.96m.

Salisbury continued her success, taking home a 7th place finish in the javelin throw (42.36m). A pair of Pirates placed in the shot put, with Danielle Eiler's mark of 13.39m good enough for 7th. Mueller recorded a mark of 11.94m for 14th place. Camelia Morman earned 8th place honors in the long jump event with a mark of 5.83m. To round out the field events on Friday, Valeria Moore took home 5th place honors (1.65m) while Lindsay Dolan came in 11th (1.55m) and Meghan Horne was 12th (1.55m). Nicole Briggs took home the only top finish for the Pirates in the track events on Friday, finishing 6th in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 38.35.32.

On the men's side, the tracksters got things rolling, with seven Pirates advancing to the 100 meter dash finals. Aidan Sanderson led the way, standing 1st in the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.62. Kevin Thompson came in 4th (10.79), Jarek Hewitt was 5th (10.81) and David Rucker finished 7th (10.85), all advancing to Saturday's finals. In the 200 meter dash, four Pirates advanced to Saturday's finals as Brandon Small came in 3rd (21.47), while Thompson was 4th (21.24), Sanderson was 5th (21.29) and Rucker was 8th (21.82). Small also advanced in the 400 meter dash with a 3rd place finish with a time of 47.09, Chris Richardson also advanced with a 4th place finish (47.16). In the 800 meter run, Richard Armstrong advanced to Saturdays finals with a time of 1:55.05 (8th). In the final track event of the day, John Loehr earned the Pirates first points, coming in 7th in the steeplechase with a time of 9:46.83.

On the field side, Akintunde Abisogun earned the best finish of the meet so far for the Pirates with 2nd place honors in the long jump with a mark of 7.05m. Travis Covington came in 3rd (6.89) while Bryson Bowling was 4th (6.83) to give the Pirates three of the top four finishes. Adding to the second place finishes, Terrance Myers' mark of 60.12m was good enough for 2nd, while Eric Frasure's mark of 58.05m gave him 3rd place honors. Frasure added a 5th place finish in the shot put with a mark of 15.91m. Spencer Barrick came in 10th in the javelin throw with a mark of 49.69m.

The Conference USA Outdoor Championships will conclude Saturday evening.
