Men's Track Earns NCAA Qualifying Marks at Gator Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla.--- The East Carolina men's track team competed at the Gator Invitational held at the O'Connell Center on Sunday. The Pirates were among 19 schools that competed in Gainesville.

Senior Julien Dunkley took second place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.21, which is an automatic NCAA qualifying time. Senior Jeremy Carter placed 11th (6.35) in the 55-meter dash, qualifying for the NCAA championships, and tenth in the 200-meter dash (21.88).

Jeff Walls, BJ Henderson, Domonick Richmond, and Darrus Cofield made up the 4x400 relay team that placed third (3:09.57), which ranks fourth in the nation.

Sophomore Kyle MacKenzie ran a season best in the mile which earned him fifth place (4:14.09) and gave him a NCAA automatic entry.

Senior De'Von Carter earned fifth place in the weight throw (16.88m).

"We had a very good day," said Pirate head coach Bill Carson. "We have to go out to Iowa State and defend our medal again, and we will do that."

The Pirates will next head to College Station, Penn. to compete in the Penn State Invitational on Feb.14-16.
