Davenport and Salisbury Claim A Pair of First Place Finishes At The CNU Invitational

Newport News, Va. -- Junior Terri Davenport (Dale City, Va.) and sophomore Chelsea Salisbury (Estell Manor, NJ) each recorded a pair of first place finishes to pace the Pirates at the Christopher Newport University Invitational on Saturday, April 24. The Pirates had 15 top five placements including five first place finishes. The Pirates also participated in the prestigious Penn Relays over the weekend before heading to the CNU Invitational.

Davenport took home top honors in the 200 meter dash (24.57) and the 400 meter, where she set a personal record with a time of 55.80. Salisbury led a one-two punch atop the hammer throw competition with a throw of 143-09, a full eight feet further than teammate Emily Thompson (135-02) who finished second. In the javelin throw, Salisbury recorded a throw of 128-06 to claim first place. Earlier in the weekend at the Penn Relays, she posted a throw of 129-10, her personal best and the second best in school history.

In other field events, Tammie Mentzel (East Patchogue, NY) led four Pirates in the top five of the pole vault championships coming away with the title, with a jump of 12-00. Freshman Lindsey Rosales finished tied for second (11-06), while Nicole Marchewka (11-00) and Kinsey Batts (10-06) finished fourth and fifth. In addition to Thompson's second place finish in the hammer throw, she also collected a two fourth place finishes in the shot put and discuss throw.

Kelsey Walker placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.53 and set a personal best record of 26.20 in the 200 meters, where she finished sixth. Freshman Nicole Callaham posted a time of 15.28 in the 100-meter hurdles to finish third, while her time of 1:04.96 in the 400-meter hurdles was good enough for second place.

At the Penn Relays, which was held from April 22-24, the Pirates' Alisha Hopkins claimed a sixth place finish in the Eastern Long jump section with a mark of 18-08.5, while senior Colleen McGinn finished tied for seventh in her heat in the high jump with a mark of 5-7.

ECU will be back in action on May 1st when they participate in the George Mason Invitational.
