Three Pirates Set NCAA Regional Qualifying Times At Carolina May Classic Invitational
05/10/2004 Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Senior Ron Pollard, junior Tammie Mentzel and sophomore Hector Cotto each recorded NCAA Regional qualifying times in their respective events this weekend at the Carolina May Classic Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Pirates earned 17 top-five finishes in 16 events in which they participated. Mentzel, a native of East Patchogue, N.Y., posted a pole vault mark of 3.75m on Saturday, and finished tied for fifth place. Fellow teammate Lindsey Rosales also competed in the pole vault and finished tied for tenth with a mark of 3.60 meters. Senior Colleen McGinn placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.68m (5-06.00). Jenee More (Oak Hill, Va.) place third in the long jump with a career-best mark of 5.48m (17-11.75). Freshman Emily Thompson earned fifth place honors n the discus (39.21m), tenth in the shot put (11.93m) and second place in the hammer throw, Flight No. 2, with a throw of 42.85 m. Darneshea Jones finished seventh (12.79) in section 1 of the 100 meter dash, while Kelsey Walker claimed third in section 2 with a time of 12.42. In men's action, Pollard claimed second place honors in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.71 and in the 110 meter hurdles, Cotto placed second with a time of 14.26, both were NCAA Regional qualifying marks. Four Pirates placed in the top seven of the 400 meter dash, lead by senior B.J. Henderson who finished first with a time of 47.45. Darus Cofield finished third (47.97), Thomas Lewis was fifth (48.35) and Domonick Richmond seventh (48.94). Both the men's and women's track teams will travel to Louisville, Ky. for the 2004 Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 13-15.
