May 12, 2006
EL PASO, Texas - East Carolina junior Eric Frasure continued his award-winning season by capturing his second consecutive league hammer throw title during first day action at the Conference USA Track & Field Championships at Kidd Field late Thursday night.
Frasure recorded a school-record toss of 64.34 meters which topped his previous personal standard of 61.79 set last season. He turned in the record-breaker on his second attempt after opening with an effort of 56.17 and following with throws of 63.07 and 63.61. Last season, Frasure won the same event in Houston with a 61.50-meter total.
Junior Terrance Myers earned a runner-up standing by completing a toss of 55.71 meters to finish ahead of third-place finisher Marcus Brown (54.69) of Southern Miss. Myers also recorded his best mark on his second throw after opening with a distance of 51.81 and closing with a clip of 54.06.
The throws also marked the seventh and sixth time this season that Frasure and Myers, respectively, have bested NCAA Regional qualification minimums.
Frasure and Myers' performance helped stake the Pirates to a first-day lead in the league championship meet which runs through Saturday. ECU tallied 18 points in the event, four ahead of second-place Tulsa and Rice, and seven better than fourth-place Houston.
The C-USA Championships will continue Friday with 16 men's events scheduled, which include both field and running competitions.
