ECU Men's Cross Country Team Takes Second At Pirate Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Kyle MacKenzie and Kristian Jorgensen finished one and two at the 2002 Overton's/Pirate Invitational at Overton's Lake Kristi on Saturday. MacKenzie won the men's race with a time of 25:34, 29 seconds ahead of his teammate. ECU placed three runners in the top 10 to help the Pirates to a second place finish behind Richmond, which is ranked among the top 30 nationally.

Matt Gorman also finished among the top 10 on the men's side, placing ninth with a time of 25:42. Jason Lee, Craig Schmidt and Ron Delzer gave the Pirates six top 20 finishers as they placed 16th, 17th, and 18th respectively.

Without the services of some of its top runners, the ECU women's cross country team finished in third place behind Richmond and Coastal Carolina. The Lady Pirates placed four runners in the top 20 led by Melinda Dubose, who finished in 14th position with a time of 19:49. Jessica Collins, Caitlin Littlefield and Rebekah Bishop also finished among the top 20.

East Carolina will host the 2002 N.C. Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships at Overton's Lake Kristi on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Pirates will also serve as the host institution for the 2002 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Nov. 16 at Overton's Lake Kristi.
