Melissa Kolbe begins her sixth season with the East Carolina Pirates and her seventh season as a member of Sharon Baldwin-Tener's staff. Kolbe's responsibilities include working with the guards and recruiting.
Kolbe, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, came to ECU from Mercer University, where she served as an assistant coach under Sharon Baldwin. While at Mercer, she assisted with recruiting, and served as the academic coordinator. Kolbe was also involved with workouts, scouting, and administrative duties.
Prior to her year at Mercer, Kolbe was an assistant coach at Valdosta State University, where she had many of the same duties as she did at Mercer.
Before she began her coaching career at Valdosta State, Kolbe enjoyed a highly successful playing career at Wittenberg University, a Division III school in Springfield, Ohio. She appeared in 105 games, starting 55, including all 28 as a junior, and 26 of 27 as a senior. She scored 753 career points, averaging a career high 9.5 points per game as a senior.
Kolbe had 510 rebounds during her time at Wittenberg, including 168 as a junior, which ranks her eighth all-time in school history. Her shooting average was an impressive .511 for her career, which is third best in school history. Kolbe helped lead her team to three conference titles and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
