Women's Basketball Begins Preseason Practice

Head Coach Heather Macy returns 11 players from last year's squad to the court

Rachel Stockdale was named an assistant coach for the East Carolina women's basketball program in July of 2012.

Stockdale spent last season as an assistant coach at Wake Forest University. The Demon Deacons' 2011-12 season was one of the best in school-history. Wake Forest won 20 games for just the second time ever and made a trip to the postseason for only the fifth time in school history.

"Rachel is going to shine at ECU," Macy said. "She coaches and recruits with the same competitive fire she displayed as a player. Her coaching and playing experience in North Carolina will greatly benefit our program and she will make a difference in our kids' lives."

Before arriving in Winston-Salem, Stockdale helped Elon reach new heights as an assistant coach. The Phoenix finished the season with a 20-13 record - the program's best campaign at the Division I level and was only the fifth team in program history to reach the 20-win plateau. The Phoenix's 11 victories at home marked the most home wins in a single season in the Division I era, while the team's postseason appearance in the Women's Basketball Invitational was the first since joining Division I.

Prior to Elon, Stockdale spent the 2007-08 season as the women's team videographer at Wake Forest. During that season, she was responsible for breaking down film and coordinating the film exchange between the Demon Deacons and their opponents. She also provided media relations assistance during the 2008 NCAA Basketball Men's East Regional.

As a student-athlete, Stockdale was a four-year varsity letter-winner at NC State. She led the Wolfpack to three NCAA Tournament appearances while also serving as a team captain. Stockdale earned a spot on the All-ACC Freshman Team and received the Peanut Doak Rookie of the Year award. She received her bachelor's degree from N.C. State in 2006 and was a member of the Dean's List.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to work for East Carolina and Head Coach Heather Macy," Stockdale said. "Her knowledge of, and passion for, the game coupled with the support for ECU Athletics and the women's basketball program, is incredible. I am extremely excited about being a part of helping the Pirates reach new heights and compete for Championships. I am certainly thankful for the opportunity Director of Athletics, Terry Holland, and head coach Heather Macy have given me, and the confidence they have shown in my ability to help elevate this program to new levels."
