GREENVILLE, N.C.- Jessica Slack's 16 points led the East Carolina women's basketball squad to a convincing 73-51 win over Marshall Tuesday evening at Minges Coliseum in the Lady Pirates Conference USA opener. ECU improves to 4-2 in C-USA openers and ties the all-time series record with Marshall at 3-3. With the win, the Lady Pirates are now 6-8 on the year, and are 1-0 in C-USA while Marshall drops to 8-6, 1-1 in league play.

The Lady Pirates started the scoring on a Jasmine Young jumper to take the early 2-0 lead. After a quick Marshall bucket, ECU scored on back to back possessions, extending its lead to 6-2 with 16:49 on the clock. A Cherie Mills three point play with 14:24 to play in the opening half gave the Lady Pirates the 9-4 advantage. Marshall's Meagan Samis scored five unanswered points to pull the Herd to within two, 11-9, with 12:52 remaining. Bridget Chacon's jumper tied the game 11-11, but a Slack three pointer and the foul on the following play put the Lady Pirates back on top, 15-11 with 12:02 on the clock. Slack's four-point play sparked a 12-0 ECU run over the next three minutes, forcing a Marshall timeout with 9:38 on the clock. The Thundering Herd put together a run of their own, cutting the ECU lead to eight, 25-17, on a 6-0 spurt. Slack's second trey of the game at the 3:26 mark ended the Herd run as well as a four minute ECU scoring drought. The Lady Pirates used a 7-0 run, capped by a Slack three pointer, to extend their lead back out to 16, taking the 36-20 lead into the break.

 

 

Mills led all scorers with 11 at the break while Slack added 10, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Samis led the Thundering Herd with nine points. The Lady Pirates shot 44.8 percent on 13-of-29 shooting while the Herd shot 33.3 percent.

ECU opened the second half on a 9-0 run, extending its lead to 25, 45-20, with 16:21 on the clock. Samis scored Marshall's first basket of the second half with 15:32 remaining in the half. Slack's fifth trey of the game at the 14:53 mark, put ECU up 50-22. Modupe Ishola's four straight free throws cut East Carolina's lead to 27, 54-27, with 12 minutes remaining in the game. The Herd got as close as 18 with 2:08 to play, but ECU easily rolled to the 73-51 victory.

Slack led all scorers with 16 points, including a career-tying five three pointers. Mills added 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Young also scored in double figures, with 12. Samis led the Thundering Herd with 13 points. The Lady Pirates shot 50 percent from the floor, and 76.9 percent from the charity stripe. Marshall shot just 33.9 percent from the floor and 60 percent from the stripe. ECU scored 23 points off 24 Marshall miscues.

East Carolina returns to Minges Coliseum this Friday as it hosts Southern Miss. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
