Britny Edwards recorded her eighth double-double of the year and Celeste Stewart led all scorers with 14 points in the Pirates' 55-52 win. The victory marked ECU's first win at Tulane since 2004.
For the second time in as many games, Stewart hit a game-changing shot. With 3:46 left in the game, and East Carolina (13-5, 3-2 C-USA) trailing 45-40, the senior point guard hit a jumper as she was fouled by Tulane's (14-4, 3-2 C-USA) Tiffany Dale. Stewart made her free throw to complete the three-point play and cut the Green Wave's lead to two (45-43). After getting the ball back, Stewart was fouled again and sank both free throws to tie the game at 45. As the Pirates gained momentum, Kyani White collected a steal and handed it off to Whitny Edwards who drained a three to give ECU a 48-45 lead. The Pirates played the final minutes with steady determination and never surrendered the lead.
Tulane managed to cut the Pirates' lead to one three times in the last two-and-a-half minutes, with the final time coming with just 17 seconds on the clock. However, ECU stayed in control and White sealed the game with two made free throws with only five seconds left in the game. East Carolina ended the contest with a steal by White as the buzzer sounded.
Stewart finished the game with 14 points and four rebounds, while Britny Edwards tallied 10 points, 11 boards, two blocks and one steal. Whitny Edwards added nine points, five boards, a pair of steals and an assist, while White posted eight points, four steals, three rebounds, and one assist.
The Pirates opened the first half on a scoring surge as they led by as many as 10 points (19-9) at 9:36 after a three-pointer off the hands of Kristine Mial. However, Tulane's defense turned on and held ECU scoreless for the final seven minutes of the first half. During those seven minutes, East Carolina saw its lead shrink and turn into a deficit as the Green Wave took a four-point (25-21) advantage into the locker room at halftime.
In the first half, Stewart posted seven points, while Mial and Britny Edwards added five points each. Britny Edwards contributed six boards in the frame to go along with two blocks, while Tatiana Chapple registered four rebounds, two points, one steal, and a single block.
The second half began much like the first had ended. Tulane led until the 7:40 mark of the second half when Whitny Edwards made a layup to give ECU its first lead since 3:37 in the first half. The lead, however, was short-lived as the Green Wave regained the lead. It wasn't until Stewart's momentum-changing three-point play that ECU turned things around and eventually took the game by a final of 55-52.
The Green Wave was led by Jamie Kaplan who notched 10 points, three boards, one assist and one steal. Danielle Blagg added nine rebounds with four points and one assist.
The Pirates return to the friendly confines of Minges Coliseum on Thursday, Jan. 31, for a conference contest against Marshall at 7 p.m. Live stats, video and a live internet broadcast will be available on ECUPirates.com.
