Pirates Fall In Triple Overtime To UAB 96-94

GREENVILLE, N.C. - UAB's Carmen Guzman hit a pair of free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining in triple overtime Sunday afternoon to give the Blazers a 96-94 win inside Minges Coliseum.
Both teams traded baskets in the third overtime, with UAB taking a three point lead, 94-91, on a Crystal McFadden 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining. ECU's Ebonee Downey scored her only points of the game with 24 seconds to go when she knotted the game at 94-94 on a trey. On the ensuing possession, Guzman made a move underneath the basket, drawing a foul from Cherie Mills with 0.6 seconds left sending her to the free throw line to shoot two.
Freshman guard Jasmine Young, who finished with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-27 shooting, found Mills in the paint with 12 seconds left in the second overtime to tie the game at 88-88. On UAB's next possession, she forced Guzman to turn the ball over with three faithful seconds left on the clock. After a Pirate timeout, freshman LaCoya Terry took a six-foot jumper for the win, but it hit off the front of the rim forcing the game into another overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Blazers (13-10, 6-6) went up four, 79-75 on a McFadden jumper at the 2:58 mark. After nearly two minutes without a point, Impris Manning scored on a lay-up to cut the lead to two with 1:16 remaining. Thirty seconds later Mills tied the game at 79-79 on a lay-up. UAB's McFadden attempted a jumper with 13 ticks on the clock, but was unable to come up with the winning basket.
During regulation, both teams traded baskets with neither team building a lead of more than six points. The Pirates went up six, 63-57, with 8:05 left in the game when Terry connected on a nine-foot jumper. UAB would go on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes behind the play of five Guzman points, which included a three-pointer, to take the lead 66-63 with just over six minutes to play.
ECU would build its lead back to five, 71-66, on the back end of Terry shooting two at the 2:12 mark. A successful three pointer by Britney Jones would cut the lead, 71-69 before Pirate forward Nicole Days scored two of her six points with 1:14 remaining to put ECU up by four, 73-69. McFadden scored the Blazers final four points to send the game into overtime.
Mills lead ECU with 23 points and collected 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. It was her 21st game of the season in double figures and the tenth time this year she has reached the 20-point plateau. Young tied a career-high in rebounds with seven and with her nine assists, she moved into tenth place on ECU's single-season assist chart with 119. LaToya Horton grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, marking the fourth time this season she has recorded double-digit rebounds. For the second straight game, Manning recorded nine boards to help the Pirates out rebound the Blazers 61-49 on the glass. She also tied a career-high in points with 13. Terry established a career-high in assists with six on the afternoon and notched her six double-digit game of the year with 12 points.
For UAB, Guzman and McFadden lead the way with 23 each and Brittany Jones added 15. LaKitha Murray pulled down a team-high nine boards, while McFadden and Diamond Rogers grabbed eight each.
The Pirates will be back on the road this weekend when they travel to UTEP (Feb. 17) and Tulane (Feb. 19) for the teams final road series of the season.
