ORLANDO, Fla. - Game four of the 2008 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship at the UCF Arena in Orlando, Fla., saw No. 9 Rice upset No. 8 East Carolina, 69-55. The Owls were led to victory by Kadie Riverin who had a game-high 20 points and a team-leading four assists.
Rice shot 50 percent from the floor and made 14-of-20 free throws, good for 70 percent. The Lady Pirates shot 62 percent (8-for-13) from the free throw line, but connected on only 1-of-19 3-point tries (5.3%) and could never cut into the Rice lead.
Despite getting just six offensive rebounds, the Owls made up for it with 40 on the defensive end and out-rebounded the Pirates, 46-34. East Carolina controlled points in the paint with a 44-30 advantage, but Rice's fluid offense and hot shooting, kept them in the lead throughout.
In addition to Riverin, second team All-Conference USA performer Valeriy Berezhynska notched double figures with 12 points and collected five rebounds. Maudess Fulton and Emery Carter tallied eight points apiece for the Owls.
Second-team All-C-USA performer LaCoya Terry led the Lady Pirates with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds and four assists. Lauren Cochran also hit double figures with 10. Nicole Days led the Lady Pirates with six rebounds in her final game in purple and gold.
Rice held a 33-26 advantage at intermission thanks to 44 percent shooting, compared to 30 percent for East Carolina. The Lady Pirates hit their only 3-pointer of the game in the first half. Terry led all scorers at the break with 10.
East Carolina ends its season at 13-17, while Rice improves to 14-17. The Owls advance to face league champion and No. 1 seed UTEP at 8:00 p.m. EST on Friday.
