Women's Hoops Holds Annual Awards Banquet

GREENVILLE, N.C. - A crowd of 101 East Carolina women's basketball players, staff, administrators and supporters filled Harvey Hall Thursday night as the Pirates recognized the accomplishments of this year's squad and looked towards a bright future for the program.
The annual event featured a catered dinner, speech by athletics director Terry Holland, academic and athletic awards presentations and a highlight video.
Senior Chareya Smith was named Outstanding Player of the Year. She led the Pirates in scoring a team-high nine times and topped the squad in scoring average at 10.9 points per game. Smith also ranked seventh in Conference USA in field goal percentage and 17th in scoring average.
The Offensive Player of the Year award went to sophomore Kristine Mial. She has knocked down at least one three-point field goal in 17 of the last 18 contests and ended the season sixth in the league in three-point field goal percentage, eighth in three-point field goals made, 11th in blocked shots and 15th in steals.
Junior Celeste Stewart was given the Most Valuable Pirate award. She scored a career-best 18 points and hit all eight of her free throws, leading the Pirates to the C-USA Tournament win over Tulsa. Stewart also finished the campaign fourth in C-USA in assists and assist/turnover ratio.
Academically, this year's team was one of the most successful in program history and at the top of the charts as compared to other Pirate squads. Women's basketball placed 11 of its 13 members on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll (3.0 or higher GPA). These honorees were awarded certificates by Academic Coordinator Kristen Meyers.
Britny Edwards, Whitny Edwards, Ariana Jackson and Kyani White were recognized with Academic Excellence Awards - given to those upperclassmen students who attain a 3.5 or higher GPA. The Conference USA Academic Medal, an accolade for student-athletes who maintain a 3.75 or better average, was also handed out to Whitny Edwards, Jackson and White.
