Nov. 8, 2008
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Five players scored in double figures to lead East Carolina over Southern Wesleyan, 87-49, in a women's basketball exhibition game inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturday night.
Freshman Jean Best led all players in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and seven boards. Sophomore Kim Gay added 14 points, senior LaCoya Terry contributed 11 with sophomore Allison Spivey and freshman Crystal Wilson netting 10 points each.
"I felt like we shot the ball well from the floor, although we didn't make many 3s," said Pirate head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. "We were able to get everybody in the game and get them all some game experience."
Baldwin-Tener's squad connected on 51.6 percent of its shots (32-62), while holding its opponent to 22.8 percent shooting (13-57).
ECU led throughout the game and never trailed by more than a single basket in the opening minutes. The Pirates went on a 22-10 run over a 10-minute stretch in the first half and pushed out to a 14-point halftime lead, 39-25.
The Pirates methodically increased their lead and doubled it midway through the second half, 65-37. Best put the Pirates ahead by 30, 76-46, on a traditional 3-point play with 3:39.
ECU's ability to force turnovers translated into several easy baskets as it scored 28 points off 26 Southern Wesleyan miscues. It also dominated the glass, out-rebounding SWC by 16, 50-34, and scoring 24 points on offensive rebounds.
The Pirates open the 2008-09 regular season Friday, Nov. 14, against Hampton. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
