NORFOLK, Va. - Cherie Mills' 17 points and nine rebounds was not enough, as Old Dominion escaped with a 77-66 win over East Carolina Monday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. ODU improves to 1-2 on the season while the Lady Pirates fall to 1-3.

The Lady Monarchs opened up the game with a quick trey by Jazzmin Walters, but Mills hit three straight jumpers to give the Lady Pirates the early 6-3 lead with 17:20 to play in the opening half. ODU retook the lead on a Tamera Ransburg layup before a Nicole Days three-point play put ECU back on top, 9-7 with four minutes expired in the half. Jen Nuzzo's three-pointer with 14:31 on the clock put the Lady Monarchs back on top, 12-9. Old Dominion went on a 19-3 run over the next six minutes, extending its lead to 39-21 with two minutes remaining in the opening stanza. ECU held the Lady Monarchs scoreless in the final two minutes, scoring six unanswered points to make the halftime score 39-27.

Sherida Triggs led all players with 10 points at the half while Mills led the Lady Pirates with eight. LaCoya Terry added seven points. Days and Jasmine Young pulled down a team-high four rebounds in the opening half. ECU out rebounded the Lady Monarchs 19-13 in the first half, but were out shot 59.3 percent to 32.3 percent.

After a quick ODU basket, the Lady Pirates cut the Lady Monarch lead to 10, 41-31, on back to back baskets by Terry with 17:53 to play in the game. A 9-0 run by East Carolina, capped off by a Young trey at the 9:55 mark, cut the Lady Monarch lead to three. ODU answered, putting together a 9-0 run of their own, on back to back three-pointers by T.J. Jordan, giving them a 12 point lead at 57-45 with 7:42 to play in the game. The Lady Pirates got as close as eight with 2:31 remaining, but late free throws by the Lady Monarchs sealed the victory, as ODU went on to win 77-66.

 

 

Mills led the Lady Pirates with 17 points and nine rebounds while Young added 16 and Terry had 13. Young added three steals and four assists while Terry dished out a team-high six assists. Jessica Slack also pulled down nine boards and added seven points. Jordan led the Lady Monarchs with 16 points, all coming in the second half. Ransburg and Triggs also scored in double figures with 14 and 11 respectively.

"I was proud of our effort tonight," head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said. "We cut it to three late in the game and never gave up. Old Dominion is a strong program, and for our team to stay as close as we did down the stretch, with a chance to tie late in the game, I am very proud of our effort."

The Lady Monarchs out shot the Lady Pirates, shooting 52.0 percent while holding ECU to 34.7 percent. East Carolina out rebounded ODU 45-33 and forced 21 turnovers.

The Lady Pirates return to action this Friday, Nov. 24 as they play their fourth game in a week as the team plays Virginia Commonwealth. Tip-off from Alltel Pavillion in Richmond, Va. is set for 7:00 p.m.
