GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's basketball team posted its seventh win of the season New Year's Day as the Lady Pirates beat Savannah State, 73-52, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

ECU (7-4) trailed by two early in the first half, 8-6, but four consecutive baskets by the Lady Pirates, highlighted by a Viola Cooper three-pointer, gave the Pirates an eight-point lead, 16-8, and ECU never looked back.

The Lady Pirates would extend their lead to 12 points, the largest of the first half, to 27-15, over the Lady Tigers (4-10) after Keisha Anthony connected on a three-pointer with 4:35 left until intermission. Anthony would add a lay up with 1:43 remaining to help ECU take a 31-24 half time lead.

In the second half, both teams traded baskets for the better part of 11 minutes, until Jennifer Jackson hit her only three-pointer of the game to give ECU a 12-point lead, 54-42, with 8:42 remaining.

The Lady Pirates pushed their lead to 19 behind a Courtney Willis lay with 5:50 remaining in the contest, 61-42. ECU's largest lead of the night was its final margin of victory, 21.

Missed shots and turnovers limited the Lady Pirates' offense as they shot 44.1 percent from the floor (26-of-59), and turned the ball over 23 times. ECU continued its dominance on the glass as they out rebounded Savannah State, 51-28.

Willis led three Lady Pirates in double figures, as she knocked down 16 points, hitting 6-of-9 from the field and going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Willis grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, recording her sixth double-double of the season.

Anthony had her best game to date for ECU, pouring in 16 points in 15 minutes of play. Junior guard Jennifer Jackson also scored in double figures with 13 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the floor, including 1-of-2 from the arc.

Senior Tiffany Stephens led Savannah State in scoring with 17 points, while juniors Carolina Moore (13) and Kemetris Hill (14) scored in double figures.

ECU will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 3, as it travels to Arkansas State for a 3 p.m. (Eastern) tip. The Lady Pirates will conclude their non-conference schedule at Murray State on Monday, Jan. 5, before heading home to open conference play against UAB on Friday, Jan. 9.
