Lady Pirate Hoops Set To Open C-USA Play Against Memphis
01/07/2005 About the Pirates: East Carolina is coming off its second win in three games after cruising by in-state for N.C. A&T, 81-56, Tuesday, Jan. 4. Senior Jennifer Jackson recorded a game-high 23 points and moved into eighth place on ECU's all-time scoring list (1,239). Teammates LaToya Horton (11) and Viola Cooper (10) also scored in double-figures, with Horton setting a career-high. Freshman Nicole Days set career-highs in rebounds (13) and assists (4), while walk-on freshman Zaneta Hill saw her first action as a Pirate playing six minutes and recording two points. Jackson leads the Pirates in scoring 15.9 points and is tied for the team lead in rebounds with 5.6 per game. She recorded her second double-double of the season against Buffalo with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and against VCU, she recorded her fourth 30-plus point game of her career. Jackson has averaged 18.2 points and connected on 38 percent of her shots (36-of-95) in the last five games. Against Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the Lady Pirate Invitational, Jackson netted a career-best 34 points, hitting 13-of-21 shots from the floor. Sutton, a 6-0 forward, is the only other Pirate to average double-figures with her 10.8 points per game and also leads the team in rebounding 5.6 boards per contest. Against VCU, she recorded her eighth consecutive double-digit game with a career-high 20 points against VCU. Sutton posted her first career double-double against Cal State Fullerton (14 points and 11 rebounds) en route to being named to the Four Points LAX Turkey Shootout all-tournament team. Senior guard Viola Cooper collected her fifth double-digit scoring game of the season as she led the Pirates in scoring netting 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor against the Aggies. Currently she ranks seventh on ECU's all-time three-point field goals made list with 63. Cooper is averaging 7.6 points and 3.1 assists per game. ECU's lone consistency can be found on the boards as they have equaled or out rebounded 10 of their 13 opponents on the season (520-452) by an average margin of 5.2. As of Jan. 3, the Pirates ranked 76th in the nation with a 4.1 margin. About Memphis: The Tigers (7-6) have won three of their last nine games after starting the season 5-0. They have two players averaging double-figures and are led by senior Victoria Crawford and her 13.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Fellow senior Jennifer Sullivan is the other player in double-digits with 12.3 points. Memphis holds a 2-1 overall series lead and won last year's meeting 79-60 inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. About Saint Louis: The Billikens (1-12) have dropped 10 straight games heading into conference play this weekend. Freshman guard Mia Johnson, who ranks fourth in C-USA in scoring, leads the team with 18.1 points per game. Junior Marquita McFarland ranks 10th in C-USA in rebounding with 7.3 boards per contest and is second on the team in scoring with 9.8 points per game. SLU leads the overall series 3-0 after winning last season 84-81 in overtime.
