Lady Pirate Basketball Heads West To Take On Charlotte In C-USA Action
01/21/2005 About the Pirates: After winning 4-of-5 games heading into last weekends Conference USA Play, the Pirates find themselves trying to snap a three game road skid when they travel to west to take on instate rival Charlotte on Sunday, Jan. 23 inside Halton Arena, before heading back home on Jan. 28. Last weekend saw the Pirates (6-11, 2-2) drop its first road series of the season when they fell to nationally-ranked DePaul (99-58) and Marquette (76-51). Senior guard Viola Cooper led ECU in scoring both games netting 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor against the Blue Demons and 13 against Marquette. She also connected on all six of her free throw attempts and grabbed 4.0 rebounds over the weekend. Jennifer Jackson leads the Pirates in scoring (15.2 ppg) and rebounds (6.1 rpg). She recorded her third double-double of the season against Saint Louis with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and against VCU, she recorded her fourth 30-plus point game of her career. Jackson has averaged 20.2 points and connected on 33 percent of her shots (35-of-105) in the last five games. Against Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the Lady Pirate Invitational, Jackson netted a career-best 34 points, hitting 13-of-21 shots from the floor. Fellow classmate Shanita Sutton, is the only other Pirate to average double-figures with her 11.1 points per game. She ranks second in rebounds, pulling down 5.8 per contest. Against VCU (Dec. 30), she recorded her eighth consecutive double-digit game with a career-high 20 points against VCU. Sutton has posted double-figure games in 11 of her last 14 games dating back to Cal State Fullerton (Nov. 27), when she recorded her first career double-double (14 points and 11 rebounds) en route to being named to the Four Points LAX Turkey Shootout all tournament team. ECU's lone consistency can be found on the boards as they have equaled or out rebounded 13 of their 17 opponents on the season (684-594) by an average margin of 5.3. As of Jan. 17, the Pirates ranked 52nd in the nation with a 5.3 margin. About Charlotte: The 49ers (15-3, 3-1) have won four of its last five games, falling only to nationally-ranked DePaul, 103-64, in C-USA action Sunday, Jan. 16. Inside Halton Arena, Charlotte boasts a 37-6 overall record under head coach Katie Meier and are 7-0 at home this season. They are led by Sakellie Daniels who is averaging 15.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. Junior forward Pam Brown is the other 49er to average double-figures with 13.4 points. In league action last week, three 49ers scored in double-digits both games. Brown netted a team-high 13 against Marquette and 11 against DePaul, while Daniels scored a team-best 12 against DePaul and 11 against the Golden Eagles.
