Jackson Earns C-USA Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week Honors
02/14/2005 IRVING, Texas -- East Carolina's Jennifer Jackson was named Conference USA Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 13. Jackson led the Pirates (10-14, 6-5) to a pair of much-needed wins this weekend over league opponents Cincinnati (58-31) and Louisville (71-65 OT). Jackson is just the second player in ECU history to receive the recognition. Courtney Willis tabbed the award on Jan. 26, 2004 for the Pirates, and Jackson earned the status on Dec. 9 during her sophomore season. For the week, Jackson averaged 25 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per game as the Pirates went 2-0 to improve to 6-5 in league action. With the wins, ECU clinched a berth to the 2005 Pepsi Conference USA Women's Basketball Tournament, which will be held March 3-6 in Charlotte, N.C. It is the third straight year the Pirates will be heading to the C-USA Tournament. Jackson collected a game-high 19 points in the weekend opener against Cincinnati and helped hold the Bearcats to a final-tally of 31 points and 21.4 percent shooting, both opponent lows for ECU. Against Louisville, Jackson posted her third 30-plus point game of the season with a game-high 31 points, while grabbing 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and 17th of her career. Jackson tied her single-game career-high for three-pointers with five, including a buzzer beater to send the Cardinal-Pirate match-up into overtime. The extra session win in C-USA action was the first-ever for an East Carolina squad. Jackson shot 40 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from behind the arc and 84.2 percent from the charity stripe over the two games. With her six three-pointers on the week, the senior now has 153 for her career, three shy of moving into second place on ECU's all-time list. "This is a great award for Jennifer and our team," said Head Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. "Jen played a pivotal role in the team's success this weekend and stepped up when it counted to help us secure a spot in the Conference USA Tournament." The Pirates travel to the Lone Star State for their final regular season road trip with contests against Houston and TCU. Friday's match-up against the Cougars will be televised regionally via Fox Southwest. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (CST).
