Women's Basketball Hosts In-State Rival Charlotte on Senior Day

    About the Pirates:The East Carolina women's basketball team will look avenge a 70-54 loss to Charlotte earlier in the season this weekend when the Pirates host the 49ers for the last time in Conference USA action. Saturday's game will mark the 29th time the two schools have met and for seniors Jennifer Jackson, Shanita Sutton, Samantha Pankey, Viola Cooper and Soraya Hellaby, it will be their last game at Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum. ECU will also use this game as a tune-up for the C-USA Tournament (Mar. 3-6) which is being held at Halton Arena in Charlotte, N.C.

    The Pirates are coming off a pair of road losses this past weekend at the hands of Houston (74-52) and TCU (66-41). In the weekend opener against Houston, Jackson (17) and Sutton (12) each scored in double-figures their 68th and 24th of their careers. Jackson came within one rebound of her 18th career double-double grabbing a team-best nine on the night.

    On Sunday, the Lady Frogs and Sandora Irvin (23 points, nine rebounds) were to much for ECU as they walked away with a 25 point win. Once again Jackson led ECU in scoring collecting 11 points, her 69th double-digit game. Freshman Nicole Days came off the bench scoring nine points in 15 minutes of action. Samantha Pankey nabbed a team-high seven rebounds, which tied her career-high, while Soraya Hellaby grabbed a career-best six boards.

    About Charlotte:The 49ers (20-7, 8-5) comes into Saturday's action tied for fifth place in Conference USA with USF and Marquette and have dropped four of its last five games. During their five game stretch, the lone win came against Cincinnati (72-63) inside Halton Arena on Feb. 13.

    Junior guard Sakellie Daniels leads the 49ers in scoring (14.2) and rebounding (7.3) and Pam Brown ranks second with 13.4 ppg and third with 5.7 rpg. In the 76-51 loss to TCU, Daniels and Andrea Davidson each collected 10 points while Tameka Smith grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. The Lady Frogs held the 49ers to 24.6 percent (15-61) shooting from the floor and forced 30 turnovers. In the weekend series finale against Houston (69-64), Brown netted a team-best 15 points and Davidson added 11, while Daniels grabbed 10 boards.

    Charlotte holds a commanding 21-7 series lead between the two schools dating back to 1983. In the last meeting Daniels recorded posted a double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds) to pace the 49ers to a 70-54 win. Brown and Davidson also scored in double-figures with 18 and 10 points respectively. For the Pirates, Cooper and Sutton each scored 15 points with Jackson adding 12. Sutton recorded her second double-double of her career with a career-high 14 rebounds.

  • Jennifer Jackson, who currently leads the Pirates in scoring (16.4 ppg), leaves the program ranked in the top-11 all-time in six Pirate statistical categories: 3-point field goals made (2nd), free throw accuracy (2nd), scoring (5th), field goal percentage (5th), scoring average (9th) and rebounding (11th). She is a two-time All C-USA selection and became the 19th Lady Pirate to record 1,000 career points. She also holds the single-season record for 3-pointers with 59.
  • Shanita Sutton is one of three seniors to have played in 100-plus games for her career. She has 65 career starts and ranks seventh all-time on ECU's shots blocked chart with 64. Currently she ranks second on the team in scoring (11.6) and rebounding (5.9). Earlier this season she recorded her first career double-double against Cal State Fullerton en route to being named to the all-tournament team at the Four Points LAX Turkey Shootout.
  • Samantha Pankey leads all current Pirates with a 80.1 career free throw percentage. The floor general of the 2004 team, she recorded a career-high 18 points against Southern Miss connecting on 6-of-7 shots from the floor. Currently she ranks second on the team in assists (79) and 15th in C-USA (3.04 apg). Pankey is a two-time District III first-team Academic All-American and ranks first out of 5, 915 students in her graduating class.
  • Viola Cooper came to ECU as a junior college transfer in 2003 and has started all 54 games for Sharon Baldwin-Tener since stepping on campus. She ranks seventh all-time in 3-pointers made with 79 and currently holds the single-season record for free percentage (81.8). Cooper has recorded 24 double-digit games and against Southern Miss recorded a season-high 21 points hitting 6-of-10 shots from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
  • Soraya Hellaby has come off the bench and proven to be a valuable post player for Baldwin-Tener. In her two seasons she has played in 40 games with three starts and recorded a career-highs in points (12 vs. Montana) and rebounds (6 vs. TCU).
