TULSA, Okla. - The East Carolina women's basketball team arrived in Tulsa, Okla., late Monday night to begin preparing for the Conference USA Tournament which will begin on Wednesday, March 13. Despite the Pirates' late arrival, ECU's Shala Hodges and Katie Paschal made it a point to volunteer their time at the "School is Cool Pep Rally Presented by Bank of Oklahoma" Tuesday morning.

A number of Conference USA institutions took time out of their busy schedules to make an appearance at Emerson Elementary School in Tulsa to talk to local kids about the importance of education and participate in the pep rally. Hodges and Paschal were joined by Corvonn Gaines, Erin Straughn, and Petar Torlak from the ECU men's team.

"It was a really good experience," Hodges said. "The kids asked a lot of questions about college and why they should stay in school. I had fun with the kids. They were very energized and fun...and they were amazed at how tall the guys were!"

Hodges, a senior guard, will graduate this summer with a degree in sports studies. The Raleigh, N.C., native was recently named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll after the fall semester.

Paschal is a junior physical education major and was named to the Dean's List at East Carolina after the fall semester.

"It was nice having the chance to talk to the kids," Paschal said. "It would have been neat to have something like this when I was growing up."

Hodges, Paschal, and the rest of the Lady Pirates are the No. 2 seed in the C-USA Tournament. ECU will take on the winner of the No. 7 seed Memphis-No. 10 seed Southern Miss game. Tip-off for the Pirates' game is at 8:30 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, March 14.
