Women's Basketball Falls To George Washington

Washington, D.C. - The East Carolina women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon as they fell to George Washington, 67-34, inside the Charles E. Smith Center.

The Pirates (1-1) got behind early as the Colonials (2-0) went on a 14-0 run in the first six minutes of play behind six points from senior Anna Montanana. East Carolina finally got on the board when LaToya Horton hit her lone free throw of the night to give George Washington a 14-1 lead.

With eight minutes to go in the first half, ECU seemed to get things going as they went on a 9-4 run and cut the lead to nine, 18-9. Sophomore Keisha Anthony connected on a three pointer followed by a Horton six-foot jumper and Ebonee Downey's three-point play, before heading into the intermission down 33-13.

At the beginning of the second half, George Washington hit 5-of-6 shots from the floor and extended its lead to 31 at 44-13. Coming out of a time-out, Anthony and senior guard Samantha Pankey each scored five points and helped ECU to cut the lead back to 19. But a final 26-4 push, gave the Colonials its largest lead of the game at 39, 67-28, with 4:25 remaining.

ECU's Tamekia Powell hit three free throws and Viola Cooper scored her only points of the game on a 13-foot jumper with 40 seconds left as George Washington walked away with the victory.

"We just couldn't get anything going today," said head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. "This is a good team and they mixed things up well against us. We're going to have to go back and figure somethings out and get ready for this weekends tournament."

The Pirates will be on the road for their next three games as they head west to participate in the Four Points LAX Surf N' Turf Shootout Tournament in Malibu, Calif. Up first for East Carolina will be Montana on Friday, Nov. 26 and then either host school Pepperdine or Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Nov.. 27. Wednesday, Dec. 1, ECU will travel to Savannah State before heading back home for the Lady Pirate Invitational Dec. 4-5.

Postgame Notes

  • For the second consecutive game, ECU out rebounded its opponent 37-34. Currently the Pirates have a rebounded margin of 5.5 over its opponents.
  • Senior Soraya Hellaby recorded her first career start for the Pirates at center.
  • Freshman Jihan Howard saw her first action as a Pirate with two minutes of play in the second half.
  • Nicole Days collected career-highs in rebounds (5) and steals (4).
  • Junior Catherine Coley recorded her first points as a Pirate hitting both of her free-throws.
  • Keisha Anthony lead ECU in scoring with eight points.
  • ECU was held to its lowest point total (37) in seven years when it scored 36 against Old Dominion on Jan. 11, 1998.
