MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- East Carolina's women's basketball team fell behind early and could never recover as the Lady Pirates opened their season with a 82-61 loss at West Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
WVU guard Sherell Sowho scored a game-high 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting including 4-of-7 from three-point range.
Kate Bulger added 17 points on 6-of-17 shooting including 4-of-8 from three-point range. JYolanda Paige just missed a triple-double scoring 12 points with nine assists and eight rebounds. Ramika McGee added six block shots for the Mountaineers.
Senior center Courtney Willis paced the Lady Pirate attack with 14 points, including a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Junior college transfer guard Viola Cooper added 10 in her ECU debut.
West Virginia's defense held the Lady Pirates to just 30.6 percent shooting from the field and just 25.0 percent from three-point distance. ECU was 0-of-15 from three-point land in the first half.
WVU led at the half, 45-20. The Mountaineers are now 1-2 all-time against the Lady Pirates.
East Carolina returns to Greenville for its home opener on Wednesday when the Lady Pirates will host North Carolina A&T. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
