Lady Pirates Prepare To Take On UNC Wilmington Saturday Night
12/12/2003 GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Coming off an impressive 81-54 victory over Coastal Carolina in the U.S. Cellular Classic championship game, the Lady Pirates turn their attention to instate rival and former CAA foe UNC Wilmington when the Seahawks come to Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. The Lady Pirates (4-3) will look extend its winning streak to three games over the Seahawks (2-2). The two instate rivals last met Feb. 21, 2001, in Greenville, with the Lady Pirates walking away with a 63-60 win. ECU holds a 25-17 overall lead in the series. In the Lady Pirates last outing, three ladies scored in double figures with senior center Courtney Willis leading the way with 22 points in 28 minutes of play. Willis also grabbed six boards on her way to being named tournament MVP. Junior guard Jennifer Jackson scored 17 points and was 3-of-5 from the three-point arc, while freshman Keisha Anthony scored a career-high 10 points. Sophomore LaToya Horton grabbed 11 boards after posting a career-high 17 rebounds against Coppin State in the first game of the tournament. Jackson and Horton earned all-tournament team honors for their performances in the U.S. Cellular Classic. UNCW enters the game with a 2-2 record, posting victories against Charleston Southern and College of Charleston. Guard Cherie Lea leads the Seahawks in scoring with 18 ppg, while Lindsay Isom is bringing down 6.8 boards per game. For the Lady Pirates to win, they will have to continue to out rebound their opponent, something they have done in six of their seven games this season. They also have to play great defense and force turnovers. Against Coastal Carolina, ECU forced 23 turnovers that led to 23 Pirate points. ECU will be back in action Dec. 21, when they travel to Winston-Salem to take on the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest at 2 p.m.
