GREENVILLE, N.C. -The East Carolina women's basketball team travels to Norfolk State for a mid-week, non-conference match up on Tuesday, December 17, at 6 p.m. The Pirates are looking to get back on the winning track after dropping their first contest of the season to Grand Canyon on Saturday.
The Pirates and the Spartans will meet for the fourth time in program history. East Carolina holds a 2-1 edge on Norfolk State. Last season, the two teams met at the ECU Thanksgiving Tournament and ECU defeated the Spartans 54-46 on November 24, 2012. Norfolk State is looking for its first win over the Pirates since November 19, 1999, when the Spartans held off East Carolina, 64-60, in Norfolk, Va. In their first-ever meeting, ECU cruised past Norfolk State, 97-76, on December 30, 1998, in Greenville, N.C.
East Carolina owns an 8-1 record after starting the year off with eight-straight victories to mark the best start in program history since the 1972-73 season. The Pirates' only loss of the year came against Grand Canyon (86-76) on Saturday at the ULM Warhawk Classic. As a team, ECU is shooting 43.3-percent, while limiting opponents to a 37.1 field goal percentage. In nine games, the Pirates have averaged 79.3 points per game and have allowed 60.7 for a scoring margin of +18.7. The Pirates are out-rebounding their counterparts 43.1 boards per game to 32.1 for a margin of +11.0. East Carolina also holds the edge in assists with 14.9 to 9.3.
Redshirt sophomore forward Jada Payne leads the offensive attack with 21.3 points per game, while redshirt junior guard Abria Trice averages 16.2. Payne is also the team leader in rebounds with 6.6 per contest. Trice is the Pirates' leader in steals with 18. Junior guard Janesha Ebron has dished out a team-best 51 assists to average 5.7 per game. She also adds 4.9 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game. Redshirt junior post Ondrea Shaw owns a team-best 18 blocks to go along with 6.1 rebounds per game, 2.4 points per game, six steals and five assists.
Norfolk State is 3-5 on the year and the Spartans are coming off of a 74-61 win over Bethune-Cookman on December 7. The Spartans average 62.6 points per game and surrender 65.6. As a team, Norfolk State is shooting 38-percent from the floor, while allowing opponents a field goal percentage of 35.4. The Spartans own a slight edge in rebounding as they average 43.5 boards per game, while allowing 39.9. They also hold the edge in assists as Norfolk State averages 13.4 to their opponents' 10.1 per contest.
The Spartans have two double-figure scorers in Rae Corbo (14.6 points per game) and Ebony Brown (11.9 points per game). Corbo also leads the team in assists (27) and steals (10), while adding 2.9 rebounds per game. Brown also contributes 3.5 boards per game to go along with seven assists, six steals and a pair of blocks. Rachel Gordon is the Spartans' leading rebounder as she averages 14.6 per game. She has also posted 9.9 points per game and a team-leading 13 blocks. Kieera Basey leads the squad in assists with 23. Additionally, Basey averages 3.0 points per game and 1.6 rebounds per game, while notching four steals.
